How to check a dentist is registered in Ireland
Search the Dental Council's register at dentalcouncil.ie by the dentist's name or registration number. It takes a minute, and it matters: only a registered dentist can legally do composite bonding in Ireland (Dentists Act 1985, s.51).
Four steps
- Get the dentist's full name. Ask the clinic who will do your treatment. The person, not the clinic, is on the register.
- Open dentalcouncil.ie. On the home page, find the box headed "Search the Register" (Dental Council).
- Choose Dentists and search. Type the name or registration number and press Search.
- Check the result is your dentist. If two people share a name, ask the clinic for the registration number. Not on the register: don't book.
Two more things worth checking
The fee notice. Dentists in Ireland must display their private fees where you can read them before the consultation. Where a fee varies, the notice must show the minimum and the maximum (Dental Council). Online prices are not the fee notice, so ask to see it.
"Cosmetic dentist" isn't a registered title. The only dental specialties on the specialist register are oral surgery and orthodontics (Dental Council).
We only pass requests to practices whose dentists are on the register.

Questions
Questions people ask
How do I check if a dentist is registered in Ireland?
Go to dentalcouncil.ie and use "Search the Register" on the home page. Choose Dentists, type the dentist's name or registration number and search (Dental Council).
Can a beautician do composite bonding or tooth whitening?
No. Practising dentistry without being a registered dentist is an offence under section 51 of the Dentists Act 1985 (Dentists Act 1985), and whitening products above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be supplied by a dentist (HPRA).
Is there a register of cosmetic dentists?
No. Ireland recognises two dental specialties for the specialist register: oral surgery and orthodontics (Dental Council). "Cosmetic dentist" describes the work a dentist does, not a registered title.
