How long does composite bonding last?

Cork clinics say 5 to 7 years for composite bonding and 10 to 15 years or more for composite veneers. How you treat it matters: grinding, nail biting and staining drinks shorten it.

What the clinics say

SourceWhat it says
Winning Smile, CarrigalineBonding 5 to 7 years; composite veneers 10 to 15 years or more
Cork Dental ClinicComposites regularly last 10 to 15 years; it recommends refreshing them every 3 years
White Smile DentalA typical 5 to 7 year lifespan with proper care

The spread is partly what is being described: a small edge repair, a full composite veneer and a whole-front "composite" are different jobs. Ask the dentist how long your own work should last, and what a repair or refresh costs.

What wears it out

Winning Smile lists three things (Winning Smile):

  • Mouth habits: nail biting, opening things with your teeth.
  • Diet: tea, coffee and red wine can discolour the resin.
  • Grinding: clenching and grinding can chip and wear bonding down. It also says bonding may not suit heavy grinders.

Its advice to make bonding last: brush and floss daily, drop the habits, and keep up check-ups.

Budget for the second round

White Smile Dental's guide says replacing bonding at the end of its life costs about what it cost first time (White Smile Dental). Six teeth at Cork's middle prices come to about €1,200 to €1,800, so over 10 to 15 years plan for that more than once. Porcelain lasts longer and costs more up front: composite or porcelain.
