Does composite bonding damage your teeth?

Cork clinics describe composite bonding as minimally invasive: little to no enamel is removed, the surface is roughened so the resin sticks, and the bonding can be modified or removed later. The trade-offs are durability and staining.

What happens to the tooth

Winning Smile describes the appointment: the dentist slightly roughens and conditions the tooth so the resin bonds, then builds the resin up in layers, shapes it and polishes it (Winning Smile). It describes little to no enamel removal. Porcelain veneers are different: they involve trimming a small amount of enamel (Cork Dental Clinic).

The trade-offs clinics list

  • Bonding is less durable than veneers or crowns, and may need replacing after a few years (Winning Smile).
  • The resin can stain over time (Winning Smile).
  • It does not whiten. If you whiten later, your natural teeth change and the bonding doesn't (bonding or whitening).
  • It may not suit teeth with major damage or decay, or heavy grinders (Winning Smile).

The one rule that protects your teeth

Have it done by a registered dentist. In Ireland it is an offence for anyone else to practise dentistry (Dentists Act 1985, s.51). Check a dentist on the register before you book.

Questions

Questions people ask

Does composite bonding ruin your teeth?

Can composite bonding be removed?

White Smile Dental's guide says bonding can be modified or removed later without permanent damage to the tooth (White Smile Dental). Ask your dentist how it would be removed in your case.

Does composite bonding hurt?

Clinics say no anaesthetic is normally needed: Winning Smile says none is required unless bonding is used for cavities (Winning Smile), and Cork Dental Clinic says it is not painful (Cork Dental Clinic).

Who shouldn't get bonding?

Winning Smile says it may not suit teeth with major structural damage or decay, or heavy grinders (Winning Smile). Only a dentist who examines your teeth can say whether it suits you.
